Waiting on Wednesday #19

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.

This week I'm waiting on:

Title: November 9
Author: Colleen Hoover
Genres: NA, Contemporary, Romance
Publication: November 10th 2015

Summary (Goodreads):
Beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with an unforgettable love story between a writer and his unexpected muse.

Fallon meets Ben, an aspiring novelist, the day before her scheduled cross-country move. Their untimely attraction leads them to spend Fallon’s last day in L.A. together, and her eventful life becomes the creative inspiration Ben has always sought for his novel. Over time and amidst the various relationships and tribulations of their own separate lives, they continue to meet on the same date every year. Until one day Fallon becomes unsure if Ben has been telling her the truth or fabricating a perfect reality for the sake of the ultimate plot twist.

So, umm, why am I waiting on this book? The cover is amazing. I love it. The color combinations is great and it just pops out and catches the eye, but even though I am one of those people who click on a book based on the cover, this time it wasn't the case. November 9 is a CoHo book and that alone puts it on the very top of my TBR-list. I've never read a book by Colleen Hoover that I didn't love, and I know that this book will be no different. I also know it will make me cry, but oh-well, it's going to be so worth it.

ARC Review: Hex by Mackenzie McGuire

Title: Hex
Author: Mackenzie McGuire
Series: Saxton Academy #1
Genre: YA, Paranormal, Romance
Publication: June 20th 2015

Summary (Goodreads):
I’m Reece. A month ago I died along with my two best friends in a car crash. Obviously, my death didn't last long. Since then, I hear voices and the nightmares – don’t even get me started. I just wanted to be normal. That meant leaving my lux L.A. life for the gothic, and icy, Saxton Academy in the mountains of Vermont. Away from the tabloids, I had a plan to get my life together. But that just isn't possible. Thanks to hotties Eli McKinnon and Carden McDowell I discovered my life is a lie. They want to help me reach my potential. I just want to be a regular girl. But darkness is coming, and if I want to stay alive, I may not have a choice.
My Thoughts:

**An eARC was provided in exchange of an honest review**

It's been a while since I read a YA book, especially a paranormal one. When I started Hex, I knew it was supposed to be a lighter kind of YA, unlike the dark ones that have been dominating the industry right now, and it made me really curious to see how it was going to play out.

Hex is about Reece, a girl who following the death of her two best friends in a freak accident descends into depression and starts experiencing weird things. When she is sent to a luxurious academy in Vermont, she doesn't expect to find answers to all her questions or to discover that she is a witch, but things aren't that easy and someone is after her. If she wants to stay alive, she'll have to accept herself and what she is.

I liked this book. True to what I expected it to be, it was light and fun to read. I don't know about everyone else, but I for one did get tired of pretty much all the YA books being about the end of the world, total devastation or something along these lines and I liked the fact that Hex was different. I had no problem getting into it and the world build while easy to understand was still good and enjoyable, even though I felt like this book only touched the surface of witches and that there was more to be explained and explored. I would have liked to learn more about witchcraft.

Reece is confused and lost when she arrives at Saxton academy, thinking of herself as crazy because of the things that happened to her and that no one could explain, but when she meets Carden and Eli, she starts to feel a strong connection to them and a sense of belonging. I liked all three of them. Reece was witty and had a sense of humor that made me smile. I could understand why she was comprehensive about being a witch when she waned to skip the crazy and just be normal after what she went through after the accident. Eli and Carden were so easy to love and swoon over, but for those wondering this is not a love-triangle, which I was very grateful for. I don't like love triangles and even though I swooned over Carden, there was no doubt that I liked Eli more. He was arrogant in the beginning and we all know how much I love jerks, but he really cared about Reece and was ready to do anything for her. The connection between them was another thing I felt wan't explained and while I liked them together, I still thought that their relationship developed and they fell for each other too fast.

All in all, this book was an easy and fun read. It's for anyone looking for a break from the usual and wants a quick read that is enjoyable.

ARC Review: Taming the Beast by Lucy King

Title: Taming the Beast
Author: Lucy King
Series: The Fairy Tales of New York #3
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication: June 26th 2015 by Tule Publishing

Summary (Goodreads):
Once upon a time, Mercedes ‘Mercy’ Hernandez had the most enormous crush on her best friend’s older brother, Seb Madison. Now, though, she can’t stand the beast. Forget that he’s as spine-tinglingly gorgeous as ever. He’s a lousy brother and a manipulative bastard, not that she ever thinks about that disastrous one night stand they once had…

Still riddled with guilt over the death of his parents, billionaire loner Seb Madison has spent so long emotionally shut off that when beautiful, fiery Mercy bursts into his life again, he doesn’t know what’s hit him. All he knows is that she confuses him and he doesn’t like it.

Yet their chemistry hasn’t faded and, when hostility turns to attraction, a no-strings affair seems the logical solution. Mercy’s taking a much needed break from her family’s Argentinian vineyard to study for an MBA and Seb doesn’t do relationships. Neither have either the time or inclination for anything other than weekends-only red-hot sex. Or do they…?
My Thoughts:

**An eARC was provided by publisher in exchange of an honest review**

This was such a great read. I'm not huge on retellings, I've read a few and I often make it a point to avoid them but when I saw the cover for this one and read the blurb, I was very much intrigued and wanted to see how this book would turn out.

Taming the beast is different from the usual Beauty and the Beast retellings. I liked the fact that Seb didn't kidnap Mercy and that she had a crush on him when she was in high school. In fact, they slept together five years ago, and now when they meet again, their attraction is just as strong, if not more, so they decide a no-strings attached relationship is a good idea, but it's not enough and soon, they both find themselves falling deeper and deeper for each other.

This book is steamy. I started it kind of late at night and it kept me up until I read the last page. I was drawn into Mercy and Seb's world and the chemistry between them kept me flipping the pages until there was nothing more to read. Mercy is strong headed and stubborn and she had no problem with telling Seb off. I really liked that about her. She was loyal to her friends and she could see deeper into Seb than he let anyone see. My heart broke for him. He was feeling so much guilt over his parents accident that he pushed away everyone, including his sister. Years later, he is lonely and the only thing in his life is work, so when Mercy barges in, he isn't prepared for how she seems to understand him without him speaking a word or the feelings she evokes in him.

While I really liked Seb and understood that he was feeling guilty for the accident that killed his parents, I disliked him for what he did for his sister and himself. He pushed everyone away until he was all alone, and he never once thought of what it did to his sister until Mercy pretty much forced him to see. His sister, Zel, too didn't think of how the accident affected her brother and that he may have pushed her away because of his guilt.

Because the book is short, there where a few things overlooked that I would have liked a closer look at. There was very little mention of Mercy's MBA and Seb's work and the ending was kind of rushed. I would have loved to know what their plan for the future was and how they would work out their separate lives to be together.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed this book very much. The writing was great and it flowed so smoothly that I couldn't sleep until I finished the book. It's short but it's fun and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a steamy book.

Title: Gold Shimmer
Series: In the Shadows #4
Author: P.T. Michelle
Cover Design: P.T. Michelle
 Release Date: August 4, 2015

Blurb
I never thought that my plan to crash a masked party to exact a bit of revenge would fall apart so easily. It was a foolproof plan. The absolute best scenario. Moon-and-stars-aligned worthy. No one would suspect I was anyone other than the wealthy, self-absorbed girl I pretended to be. The one who would wreak havoc that night.

Then again, I also didn’t plan on running into a wall of sharp wit and steely determination named Calder. The dominant, charismatic Navy SEAL might’ve called me by Celeste’s name, but he refused to let me hide my true self from him. His special brand of honest, seductive charm was impossible to resist. He was confident and demanding…and everything I wanted. But the deeper I fell, the higher the stakes rose while playing a role. So I held onto our intense connection for as long as I could, knowing that he would never know me as Cass.

When an unexpected turn of events gives me a second chance to see Calder again, of course the opportunity comes with strings attached. I had no idea how dangerously tangled and deeply knotted those strings would become, but for the one man who gave me the courage to live my life for me again, I’d do just about anything.

Even become someone else.
